 Construction: Natural gut has been regarded as the premiere tennis string since the early 1800's. Contrary to urban legend it is NOT made of cat or sheep gut. While cats and sheep can take a collective sigh of relief with this news, our friends the cows need be concerned. Natural gut is made out of a part of the cow intestine called the serosa. While natural gut strings were indeed initially constructed from the intestines of sheep, the tensile strength simply wasn't strong enough for the higher technology laden racquets. Cow guts, the serosa in particular, are used exclusively in the production of high quality natural gut tennis string, except perhaps for some of those off brands seen on ebay! The ebay strings may indeed be composed of sheep or even cat gut based on the reported durability. It takes approximately 3 cows to produce one set of string, thus providing insight as to why natural gut strings have such a high price tag.
